Frustrated by his failing attempts at gaining infinite knowledge through magic, Heinrich Faust and his assistant Wagner go for a walk to see the Easter celebrations nearby. Unknown to him, the demon Mephistopheles made a bet with God that he can tempt his favourite human to sin. Mephistopheles convinces Faust to sign a contract promising his soul to the Devil in exchange for his heart’s desires – among them the lovely Gretchen.
Considered one of the greatest works of German literature, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust is a tragic tale of thwarted desires and self-delusion. Published in two parts between 1808 and 1831, the play has only been performed twice in its entirety due to a total runtime of about 21 hours.
